Associate Professor, College of Business
Robert Barbato is an Associate Professor of Management and the Director of the Small Business Institute. His primary teaching and research interests are in the areas of entrepreneurship and organizational behavior.
Bob joined RIT in 1979, and in 1989 he received a Fulbright award to lecture at the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. He has served as the President of Region II of the Small Business Institute Directors Association, and he has served on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship. His publications have appeared in journals such as: the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Private Enterprise, the Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, the Journal of Small Business Strategy, Organization Development Journal, and Business and Society Review.
He has consulted for organizations such as: Rochester Community Savings Bank, Mercury Aircraft, Bausch and Lomb, the Rochester Police Department, ArcWorks, the City of Rochester, and the Rochester Psychiatric Center. In 1988 he founded USA Baby, a children's furniture store, which he sold in 1995. He is also the former owner of Don's Original at Sea Breeze, a fast food restaurant, which he sold in 1991, and Don's Original at Charlotte, which he sold in 1987.
Bob is serving his second 4-year term as a Town Councilman in the Town of Brighton. He was first elected in 1991, and he was reelected in 1995. He was a volunteer for over 5 years with the Genesee Valley Chapter of the American Heart Association, where he served as the Chairman of the Board in 1986 and 1987.
A native of Rochester, Bob graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 1968. He received a B.A. in Mathematics from LeMoyne College in 1972, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1979.
