Meal Picking

This activity introduces systems for meal picking at distribution centers for patient cafeterias in hospitals, airline meal services, etc. Systems designs are discussed and tested through computer simulations.  Using controlled scientific experiments, students calculate average picking times and brainstorm ways to improve the systems designs in order to decrease overall picking times.  The Pick-to-Light System is introduced, which is a digital system used in warehouses for picking, sorting, and preparing orders.  Students perform a cost analysis based on data retrieved from computer simulations.
