Computer Engineering
Co-op: Nortel Networks

“My first co-op was for Nortel Networks located at Rochester, NY in the winter quarter of my third year. The main project I worked on was porting one of their applications from one computer platform to another while upgrading the supporting libraries (i.e. Oracle…).

“I had a good background going into the situation but I never had formal academic training on the platforms, tools or concepts that I was supposed to employ. When I say I had a good background I mean that RIT had taught me to learn and adapt to whatever situation I was thrown into. Of course there were many great people there (some that were RIT graduates) to help me and guide me when I wasn’t sure I was on the right path.

“In addition to my normal duties I attended staff meetings and weekly group meetings where I contributed ideas and suggestions. Never once did I feel that my additions weren’t taken seriously or that they were brushed away. In fact one of my suggestions was actually taken with a product being built around it (this led to a later co-op). All in all my co-op experiences have enabled me to learn beyond RIT’s intended course of study, meet some really great people and make myself more of a commodity in my current full-time job.”
