Dr. Ghoraani received her B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Sharif University of Technology (Iran); her M.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Iran), and her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Ryerson University. She joined the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at RIT in 2012 and started her research group “the Biomedical Signal and Image Analysis (BSIA) Lab”. Dr. Ghoraani completed her Ph.D. at Ryerson University (2006-2010), where she developed non-stationary signal analysis to develop effective methods for risk assessments in Cardiac Sudden Death (SCD) and speech pathology. Dr. Ghoraani was a postdoctoral fellow in Faculty of medicine at University of Toronto (2010-2012) where she performed a collaborative research with Toronto General Hospital (TGH), in developing signal and image processing techniques to characterize the human atrial fibrillation (AF) mechanism (cardiac electrophysiology). She has also performed research with Sunnybrook Health Hospital, in developing signal processing techniques to explore age-related declines in understanding speech.
Dr. Ghoraani has had extensive experience as an engineer working in the field (2000-2005), a teacher, and a researcher. Her achievements were recognized through prestigious scholarships and awards, including Mitacs Elevate Industrial Fellowship (2012), the G. Gordon M. Sterling Engineering Intern Award (2012), nomination for the Governor's General Gold Medal at Ryerson University (2010), the Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (2007-2010), the Graduate Research Excellence and Best TA awards in 2009; and the IEEE Toronto Section Outstanding New Leader Award (2009 and 2011). Dr. Ghoraani has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal papers, conferences papers, one book, and one book chapter.
Dr. Ghoraani’s research focuses on developing signal and image analysis techniques for medical instrumentation, cardiovascular engineering and instrumentation, and audio and speech processing. The current projects at her Lab are focused on a collaborative research with clinicians to investigate the pressing technology problems and limitations in order to find solutions for a successful atrial fibrillation treatment.
