2490 - AutismUp
Starting with a rocking chair base, the students in the Spectrum Support Program (SSP) brainstormed how to incorporate a rocking chair into their design. They wanted mobility and movement while also producing a fun chair you could still sit in. Leaning into the rocking chair theme, the students came up with the idea of skiing. To stay on theme with RIT, Roarie- the white skiing tiger was brought to life!

"Pond" by Aidan Lees
3422 - Caring and Sharing Jr. Academy
This vintage children's chair was originally purchased as a Christmas present for a little girl from the windows of McCurdy's department store in downtown Rochester. She has long since grown up and it was sitting unused in her brother's garage. I was struck by the listing while searching for a base to paint and had my mind set on it immediately, I loved the idea of painting on a rocking chair, especially one with such a nice shape.\n\nI had trouble figuring out what exactly I should theme the chair around at first. Candyland was my main thought, actually, but I couldn't settle on anything that felt good enough for that wavy centerpiece in the backing of the chair. As soon as I pictured a waterfall, things clicked into place immediately. I was a child who grew up by the Pennsylvania woods, always exploring the creek in my backyard, so there was plenty of inspiration from my own life to draw from.\n\nI would have felt like the coolest kid in the world having this be my reading chair in elementary school, and I hope I'm not the only one!
A child sized rocking chair painted like a cartoonish pond inspired design. There's a waterfall, a lily pad, and moss on the armrests as well as a few little friends.

"Lilac Garden" by House of General Science-Alex Nacol, Eli Nolan, Lex Fogg, Lily Fagan, Liam Nevins, Hannah Graupman, Kenny Yang, Hayley Morris
1594 - Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester
Our design for this chair is inspired by the official flower of Rochester, the Lilac! The Lilac Garden is representative of many of the different ways in which native plants feed several aspects of the environment, from providing food to insects such as the butterflies we designed (Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Clouded Sulphur Butterfly, and Red Admiral, all of which can be found throughout Rochester!), to sufficing as essential habitats and nutrient sources of aquatic and soil ecosystems, and so much more. It serves as a reminder that planting native plants in any environment can help so many more critters than what can be seen on the surface, and we sincerely hope for it to be able to spread joy into the life of whoever ends up taking it home.

"Rural Lawn" by Cecilia Petti
212- Center for Youth Inc.
Spending time in the countryside is something I love, but don’t always have the opportunity to do living in Rochester. For me, Rural Lawn is emblematic of the quiet summer nights in the rural parts of the Northeast that make me feel so nostalgic. I hope when gazing upon it, you smell the fresh wildflowers, enjoy the scenery, and it makes you want to take a walk on a quiet piece of land.
I wanted to use lighter and summer-esque colors to create what I like to envision as a wildflower garden you may see on a lot of rural properties.

"C.D. (chair d'art)" by HArts Eboard-Clara Proulx, Calliope Temple, Cecilia Hoover, Tulip Burns, Connor Vallandigham
2313 - Flower City Arts Center
RIT's House of the Arts (HArts) is a vibrant community of students who all share a passion for the arts. The theme of this chair reflects our lively and colorful organization, and is inspired by aesthetics from the Y2K and vaporwave eras.\n\nThe spectrum of colors reflected from a CD was the main motif we decided upon. From there, the design evolved to incorporate vivid colors and bold shapes throughout. The HArts organization's colors are also apparent with the classic CMYK color palette.\n\nWe hope you enjoy viewing this piece!
A vibrantly-painted chair featuring the image of a CD, along with sound waves and a halftone effect to evoke a feeling of Y2K / vaporwave nostalgia.

"Wonderland" by Courtney Schaeffer
233 - Hillside Children's Center
I looked first at the chair legs and thought that putting designs on it would make it interesting. I liked the idea of putting the flamingos onto the legs to give the chair color and interest. I then thought about putting a spiral on the seat so when you look downward it looks like a rabbit hole. The mad hatter hat is a subtle nod to the decent into madness and the character. Then putting on the back the Cheshire Cat was to encourage the viewer to see all sides of the chair. The design as a whole wanted to feel chaotic and fun and I really enjoyed the ability to freely play with color and design.
Its multicolored with the Cheshire Cat on the back

Simple in design, these chairs are meant to show how seamlessly one season flows into the next, cold-warm, rest-renewal.

"The Lobster?" by E.G.G.-Elana Shuel, Gracy Fraysure, Gabriel Thompson
231 - Foodlink, Inc.
We knew we wanted to have a bold design and reupholster the chair seat, so we firstly based our idea off of which fabric we chose, that being one with a light blue background adorned with little red lobsters. Then we decided to personify the whole chair as a lobster itself, painting a gradient on the backing like a lobster abdomen, wrapping it in trim much like a checkered picnic cloth, and attaching lobster claws to the armrests.
Our chair is wholly themed off lobsters, with gradient on the back to mimic lobster scales, a seat cushion reupholstered with lobster fabric, red and white checkered trim akin to picnic cloth, and lobster claws on the armrests.

"Fragment" by Team Fragment-JJ Wu, Cameron Murphy, Atticus Faucher, and Bryanna Hoang
120 - American Red Cross, Greater Rochester Chapter
Inspired by graphical realism and cyberpunk graphic design, I took inspiration from Antireal, one of my favorite artists for this work. With such a dark background, each color really gets to emerge against the black background. I wanted to create a really simple design, and one that was very simple to understand. During my process, I thought of the chair more as a 3 dimensional canvas than as a piece of woodwork, which helped me spatially visual how I wanted my design to interact with the work surface. As a 3D digital design major, I don't get to use physical materials often, so this project was a fun deviation for me.\n\nAs for my team, Cameron and Atticus helped me sand down the chair for painting, and Bryanna Hoang helped with the painting.\n\nMy artist signature can be found on the bottom of the chair in white paint and I also wrote "RIT" on the bottom.\n\nIf you are interested in my other work, please see my Art Station: jj_wu.artstation.com
A full black background with 4 different accent colors used. Blue, green, red, and yellow. Each shape appears mainly in one style of shape. Blue is mainly squares, red is rectangles, green is triangles, and yellow is polygons. Each of the 4 chair legs acts as an origin point for a specific color, and those colors make their way to the upper and center parts of the chair with shapes that get closer and closer. The 4 colors work their way up the backrest of the chair to meet each other once again, this time

"Melted Grace" by Olivia Henderson
1594 - Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester
This chair gave me a chance to try drip pour painting on it. I have been exploring with drip pour over the years, but not on such a big piece like this. As well as the chair used to be a black color. I was worried the paint wasn’t going to be able to cover it all up with them being light. So I painted the chair a nice cream tan color underneath about 3-4 times to cover most of it up, and I think that really helped the initial flow of paint cover it over. I did these pours about 3-4 times to cover the whole chair, and then covered in poly acrylic to seal it in for wear. I went for a nice leather fabric for the seat, so I redid the entire seat of the chair to fit into my design.
Drip Pour Painted chair with greens, blues, yellows, and white pouring down the chair, with a nice leather darker tan seat.
