Saunders College of Business
Dr. John Tu’s scholarship centers on the intersection of information systems strategy, technology management, and the behavioral implications of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) usage in organizational settings. His earlier research contributed significantly to understanding absorptive capacity, manufacturing integration, and mass customization, while his more recent work advances theoretical understanding of human–technology relationships in the era of AI adoption and digital dependence. An important stream of his research examines technostress—the strain caused by technology demands—and, more recently, the emerging phenomenon of NoTech Stress, the psychological and organizational consequences of ICT inaccessibility in an increasingly digital workplace.
Practically, his recent findings on technological stress and AI related disruptions offer organizations actionable guidance on mitigating productivity losses during ICT outages, designing resilient digital infrastructures, and improving employee well being. His work provides managers with evidence based strategies to navigate technology driven change, strengthen operational continuity, and foster healthier, more adaptive digital work environments. Methodologically, Dr. Tu employs a diverse set of quantitative and mixed method approaches, including large scale empirical studies, structural equation modeling, path analysis, conceptual framework development, and socio technical and institutional theory lenses.
Dr. Tu is a highly published scholar, with articles appearing in leading journals such as Information Systems Research, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Sciences, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and Information and Organization. His scholarly impact is reflected in more than 13,000 Google Scholar citations, underscoring the widespread influence of his scholarly work.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tu has received several prestigious awards, including the national Elwood S. Buffa Doctoral Dissertation Award from Decision Sciences Institute, the Dean Zutes Research Fellow Award, and multiple best paper awards. His research continues to shape contemporary understanding of technology’s role in the workplace, influencing both academic discourse and managerial practice.
