Peter Hauser
National Technical Institute for the Deaf
Dr. Peter C. Hauser’s interdisciplinary research examines how culture and language shape the cognitive, linguistic, educational, and health outcomes of deaf and hard-of-hearing people across the lifespan.
Dr. Hauser is Professor and Director of the Research Center on Culture and Language (CCL) at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), Rochester Institute of Technology. Drawing on psychology, cognitive science, linguistics, and deaf studies, his scholarship spans language acquisition, cognitive development, executive functioning, sign language processing, interpreting, health communication, and educational access. By integrating biological, psychological, linguistic, and sociocultural perspectives, his research advances scientific understanding while informing educational, clinical, and community practices that improve the lives of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
Dr. Hauser's research has been supported by more than $5 million in external funding and has resulted in numerous publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and invited presentations at national and international conferences. He is particularly committed to mentoring the next generation of researchers, having supervised more than 125 student researchers, many of whom have gone on to doctoral programs and leadership positions in academia and the deaf community. His contributions have been recognized nationally and internationally, including being named Deaf Person of the Year by Deaf Life magazine in 2020. He has also served in numerous research leadership roles, including appointments to advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
