Complex Still Life
Mastering Form: Expressive Still-Life Drawing
This project centers on observing and rendering real objects through detailed still-life drawing. Using a setup of at least four items with varied shapes and textures, the goal was to accurately capture proportion, form, light, and shadow. The process progressed from quick pencil and charcoal studies to a fully developed A2 composition, refined with shading and highlights to emphasize depth, structure, and the expressive qualities of materials. The final drawing demonstrates careful observation, technical skill, and a thoughtful approach to composition, bringing everyday objects to life on the page.

This project is of a toy set from sylvanian families, where there is an exploration of different textures (fuzziness of the figurines, wood) and perspective, as well as structure and shading. The mediums used were charcoal, graphite pencils and alcohol markers. The focus of the drawing is the bunny, as all the other animals stare at it. It’s meant to convey a little story.

This project focused on drawing our own still life composition using complex objects depicting different materials, shapes, and angles. One of the core goals of this project was to be able to depict these objects accurately by creating volume and contrast. This drawing was made using pencils, charcoals, and ink- with shading techniques including hatching and cross hatching.

Anjali Nair
This project was about exploring various compositions and bringing the drawings to life. The subject of this composition was a Miss Dior perfume bottle wherein the drawing was made using varying graphite pencils including HB,2B,4B,6B,8B and 10B. This drawing was both relaxing and satisfying to do. It was an enjoyable process that took me out of my comfort zone.

This project explores complex objects with diverse textures, including glass, fabric, and metal. Multiple light sources were incorporated , such as candles, to keep the composition dynamic and visually engaging. Graphite was used for rendering the objects, while charcoal was applied to the background to achieve deeper contrast. The piece is completed on an A2 sheet.
