Mallory, James R. and Linda M. Bryant. "Making HyFlex Work for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners: Practical Lessons from Six Courses." Faculty Focus. (2026). Web. ∆
This article shares what worked, and what did not, while teaching six HyFlex information technology courses for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, DHH, students at RIT/NTID. Combining in person and Zoom participation, the classes included both college students and working alumni preparing for CompTIA A plus certification. Over three years, the teaching team refined practical strategies that made HyFlex effective, flexible lesson design, accessible classroom layouts, overlapping supports such as interpreters and captions, and interactive tools like games and mnemonics. Although technology and scheduling posed challenges, most students completed the course successfully and many earned certification. The experience showed that HyFlex success requires more than technology, it depends on inclusive design, instructor presence, and expertise with DHH communication.
