Abstract

This presentation will discuss the research process involved in learning about antiracist writing practices as well as conceptualizing, planning, and interviewing students, staff, and faculty on the what, why, and how of antiracist writing practices.

Three of us undergraduates created this video under the guidance of Dr. Rachel Mazique, for RIT/NTID’s Anti-Racism Scholarship, funded by NTID’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. I, Nadaa Nafiisa, was Assistant Producer and will present on the making of our video with Kiara Diaz, a cinematographer, editor, and interviewer. We are both Deaf, and we collaborated with Ivan Widlund, a hearing undergraduate.

Our cross-college, interdisciplinary collaborative research process combined our skills and knowledge from our different fields of study, while learning about antiracist writing practices. Our goal was to create a compelling explanatory video that could be disseminated publicly to educate faculty at RIT/NTID and beyond, and to participate in the national scholarly conversation about antiracist writing practices. After presenting about our research process and the making of the film, we plan to preview our brief video so the audience may also learn from our interview subjects.
