Abstract

This presentation explores innovative approaches to assessing American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency through the integration of GoReact technology in advanced ASL courses. Traditional assessment methods often face challenges such as ensuring authenticity, accommodating diverse learner needs, and mitigating grading fatigue. To address these issues, we implemented a specific assessment within an ASL IV course, combining signed narrations, bilingual question formats (ASL and English), and scenario-based expressive tasks. The design allows students to receive messages and respond to inquiries in an almost real-life situation during video recording. Preliminary findings suggest that technology-supported assessments can improve authenticity, streamline grading, and provide equitable opportunities for students with varying abilities. This work contributes to the development of scalable, performance-based ASL assessments aligned with ACTFL standards and responsive to the evolving needs of ASL learning and teaching.
