What’s changing

Phone settings in the Mobile Admin Portal have been updated to align with call handling settings in the Desktop Admin Portal, including Desktop/Mobile Apps, simplifying training and troubleshooting

In User Settings:

  • Screening, Greeting, and Hold Music: moved to Phone > Call rules and voicemail
  • Call Handling & Forwarding (Work hours, After hours, Forward all calls, and Custom rules): moved to Phone > Call rules and voicemail
  • Messages: moved to Phone > Call rules and voicemail

Benefits Administrators and Users share a common view of Phone settings.
Phone setting options and setup in the Admin Portal and desktop and mobile apps are the same, simplifying training and troubleshooting.
New call rule design combines greeting, ring, and missed call settings together making it easier to set up how incoming calls are handled.
Administrators can view, edit, and activate call rules from the Admin Portal, including Do Not Disturb, providing better visibility and control of user call handling.

The updated technology provides the RIT community with the following improvements:

You can use this phone system in the following ways:

  • On your computer (recommended method)
  • Mobile
  • Physical desk phone

Dial the 10 digit number.  No need to dial 9 first. 

Over the next several weeks, your RIT phone coordinator will reach out to you via email with more information.

Yes. Numbers will not be changed.

Yes, people can delegate that you can answer their phone.

International calls can be dialed from RIT administrative and faculty telephones that have international dialing capability. To request international dialing, refer to the 'How to: Request Long Distance Dialing Service' article here.

 

International numbers can be called directly as well as an operator-assisted option and a directory-assisted option.

Direct international calls can be made by dialing '011' + country code + 10-digit number + '#'

  • Ex: to call (000) 123-456 in country A, you must dial '011' + A's country code + '(000) 123-4567' + '#'
  • Please allow 45 seconds for the ringer to start.

Note that calling Canada, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other points in the Atlantic Region, you need to dial the same way as you dial other long distance calls within the United States. Refer to the Frontier White Pages for country codes and city codes, and for time differences from Eastern Standard Time.

 

Yes, you will be able to forward your phone calls to other extensions.

Yes, there is a mobile app that you can install on a personal device. Cell phone, tablet, etc. You can also set work hours of when to ring your cell phone.

No. It isn’t required that you use your personal cell phone. Message and data rates may apply.

Everyone with a current 475-xxxx number will be given a computer phone. A limited number of desk phones are available to those who meet certain criteria. Please reach out to your phone coordinator for more information.

No. Everyone will get a computer based phone with an optional headset. The headset will allow people in shared areas to take calls without disrupting others. The call quality will be better. Desk phones will be provided upon request. Your phone coordinator will reach out to you with the options.

A computer based phone (or soft phone) is RIT’s new phone system that allows the community to make and receive telephone calls over the internet via a computer or other internet enabled devices.

No. The cost of the new phone is part of the project costs.

Headsets will be optional and are not required, but will be provided as part of the project upon request.

Yes, anything that is compatible with USB or Bluetooth can be used. We recommend using the headsets that are provided as part of the project upon request.

No. The cost of the new standard headset is part of the project costs.

Yes, everyone will have voicemail. The new system will also have an option for you to get your voicemails sent to your email.

You will be able to request an RIT number after August 14, 2023.

Yes, just like most other RIT applications, MFA will be required.

Yes. Multiple modes of training will be offered. Additional information will be provided soon.

Phase 1- Main Campus

  • Cloud softphone (computer phone) solution for voice, voicemail, and SMS
  • Analog device support including faxing
  • Replacement of the majority of desk phones with a computer phone

Phase 2 - RIT Inn

  • On-premise system for voice and voicemail
  • Hospitality functionality integration with their property management system
  • Replace existing phones

Phase 3 - Life Safety

  • On-premise analog solution that addresses connectivity to analog life safety devices on campus
  • Security panels, blue light phones, elevators, fire alarms, panic buttons, alarms.
