MCET Capstone Project. Battery Powered Electric Car Jack.

Location

Engineering Technology Hall - 1130 McGowan Commons

This project seeks to retrofit an existing emergency roadside vehicle scissor jack to operate on rechargeable power tool batteries. It will have the capability to raise and lower automatically to a height selected by the user. It will use data from an ultrasonic distance sensor input into a PLC to calculate and display the current height of the jack. This data will also be used by the PLC to signal the motor to raise or lower the jack until it reaches the height input by the user. In addition to the prototype product, this project will showcase the use of some of the tools prospective students will learn in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program. These include skills like static and dynamic load determination, creation of CAD models, stress calculations, sensor and circuit integration, coding and finite element analysis.
