College of Engineering Technology
Dr. Yangming Lee’s research work improves robot efficiency and safety in surgical procedures and agricultural breeding by integrating perception, modeling, planning, and execution with probabilistic methods, causal learning techniques, and deep learning. His work explicitly models the fusion and decision-making processes in robotic perception, enabling robots to process complex, high-dimensional data, generate human-understandable reasoning, operate under uncertainty, and adapt to dynamic environments.
Dr. Lee’s research has received academic recognition. His work has been published in top-tier robotics conferences and journals, including ICRA, IROS, and IEEE Transactions, and has garnered thousands of citations. He has been invited to serve as an organizer, associate editor, and guest editor for leading publications in his field, and his contributions have been honored with the title of Outstanding Editor. His research has also been recognized by funding agencies, where he has served as a Principal Investigator (PI) for projects supported by federal agencies such as the NSF and NIH, as well as research foundations and industry partners.
Dr. Lee is dedicated to integrating cutting-edge robotics research into the education of future engineers and scientists. He not only incorporates his research into his courses but also provides research opportunities and mentorship, engaging students beyond the classroom. In particular, he has refined the concept of using robots as a platform to ignite interest, enhance hands-on learning, and build student confidence. His group has successfully attracted students from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities and individuals from underrepresented groups, fostering their active participation in robotics research.
