Development of an Assessment Plan for the New MS Chemistry Curriculum
During semester conversion, the M.S. Chemistry program faculty revamped the curriculum and focused on preparing students to be marketable to industry and Ph.D. programs. The student learning grant funds were used to develop a meaningful assessment plan to assess the success of the new curriculum.
The new curriculum places a larger emphasis on communicating the results of scientific experiments in both written and oral form. The new assessment plan will monitor how well students are being trained to communicate results using four methods: student seminars, written seminar reviews, a writing project, and a thesis/project.
Moving forward, the Chemistry Graduate Committee will follow placement data and track graduates’ career progress to ascertain the effectiveness of the assessment tools and use the information to enhance and improve pedagogy and curriculum.
