Name: Michael E. Pollock

Class Year(s): 1977

Note: Michael Pollock ’77 (CAD) is a volunteer advisor (Monroe County, N.Y.) to the first Orthodox Jewish all-women's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Basic Life Support;s First Responder service in the United States. This EMS organization, Ezras Nashim, was created to allow observant Jewish women a way to maintain Tznius, or modesty, which is a way of life. Ezras Nashim and this cultural divide that only men can be EMS providers in Orthodox Judaism is highlighted in the PBS Documentary entitled, 93Queen. Their tagline is "Women for women", however, they will treat anyone as a patient. Their executive director is the Hon. Rachel (Ruchie) Freier, Paramedic. She is the first Hasidic female elected to a civil court judge position in NYC and the first Hasidic woman elected to public office in America. The group is based in Boro Park, Brooklyn (N.Y.) and new chapters are forming. Michael accompanied the group to the New York State capitol, where they were honored with a "Floor Introduction" in the Assembly Chamber by Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D, WF-Fresh Meadows). They had ten different 1:1 meetings with assembly members and finished their day with a 30-minute meeting with New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathleen C. Hochul. They have a goal of becoming a Basic Life Support – Transport agency. This would allow them to have their own ambulance. Currently, they depend on the FDNY EMS to transport their patients, while the Ezras Nashim EMT’s ride with them to the hospital.

Note: Michael Pollock ’77 (CAD) was selected to be a member of the newly elected Monroe County (N.Y.) Executive’s Transition Committee - Public Safety Subcommittee. The members worked in subgroups in which they possess specialized knowledge. Michael has worked in Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services, Firefighting and Emergency Management. The subcommittee’s responsibility was to recommend current areas of County operations that needed attention on a priority level and progress in the near future. The purpose was to create a seamless changeover of County government management and improved levels of service to the stakeholders in the future. The final recommendations were presented in a written report to the County Executive and his new management team for review, prioritization and implementation.

Name: Alexander Liem

Note: Alex Liem ’17 (CET) is a University of Colorado Boulder aerospace student who has been selected as a member of the 2020 Matthew Isakowitz Fellowship Program. The initiative provides summer internships and executive mentorship to inspire the next generation of commercial spaceflight leaders. Now in its third year, the highly-selective program awards exceptional college juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing aerospace careers with paid internships at cutting-edge commercial space companies. Fellows also receive one-on-one mentorship from accomplished members of the space community, including astronauts, engineers, entrepreneurs, executives, investors, and others. During his tenure at RIT, Alex was a member of the student-run Electric Vehicle Team and worked at SpaceX as part of his degree. Most recently, he completed an internship at the Aerospace Corporation and is currently pursuing a MS in Aerospace Engineering Sciences at CU Boulder with a focus on Bioastronautics. Alex is passionate about human spaceflight, and, after getting his degree, hopes to return to the space industry to help create new destinations in space (and the means to get there).
