Veteran Training

RIT, with support from New York State’s Empire State Development (ESD), is proud to offer a specialized training program that equips local veterans with high‑demand skills for careers in electronics manufacturing.

In partnership with regional employers, this fully funded four‑week program includes a $2,500 stipend, hands‑on instruction in electronics manufacturing fundamentals, and the opportunity to earn two industry‑recognized certifications. Participants will also complete a final week of Power Skills training led by faculty from RIT’s College of Business, culminating in networking opportunities with local company professionals.

A total of 60 veterans will be trained over the next two years. Six cohorts of ten trainees will participate, with additional sessions planned for September and October of this year. If you’re interested in joining an upcoming cohort, please complete the form below and check this page regularly for new program dates.

Cohort 1 begins June 1, 2026.

Eligible participants should be underemployed or unemployed veterans or members of their family.

Week 1 - Electronics manufacturing introduction

In Week One, participants are introduced to the vocabulary and fundamentals of an electronics manufacturing job. Each step of the manufacturing process is presented in sequence, with demonstrations conducted on a real‑world manufacturing line at RIT. This week is designed to ensure all participants develop a shared understanding of how electronics are built, how individual roles on a manufacturing line contribute to overall product quality, and how quality is established and maintained throughout the process. By the end of Week One, participants are fully prepared for the remaining three weeks of hands‑on technical training and certification.

Week 2 and 3 - IPC certification training

During Weeks Two and Three, participants focus on two widely recognized industry certifications: IPC‑J‑STD‑001 and IPC‑A‑610. These weeks provide in‑depth instruction on the standards that govern reliable electronics manufacturing. Participants learn proper soldering materials, processes, and workmanship requirements through IPC‑J‑STD‑001, followed by training in IPC‑A‑610, which defines the acceptability criteria used to inspect and evaluate electronic assemblies. Instruction is reinforced through hands‑on practice and real‑world examples, emphasizing how these standards are applied on the manufacturing floor. By completing these certifications, participants gain the technical knowledge and quality mindset required for entry‑level positions in electronics manufacturing and inspection.

Week 4 - Week on Employability & Workplace Readiness

One week of the program is dedicated to employability and workplace readiness skills, the non-technical capabilities veterans need to successfully enter, adapt to, and thrive in the civilian electronic manufacturing workplace.

During this week, participants explore how civilian workplace differs from the military and develop practical skills for navigating professional expectations in manufacturing environments. Topics include communication and teamwork, workplace professionalism, understanding organizational norms, working with supervisors and peers, and managing expectations around performance, feedback, and career growth.

Veterans will also have opportunities to engage directly with employers and industry professionals, gaining firsthand insight into what hiring managers and supervisors look for, common transition challenges, and strategies for long-term success in the electronic manufacturing industry.

This week is designed to support a smooth transition from training to employment by strengthening confidence, clarity, and readiness for the realities of civilian work, complementing the program’s technical training with the skills that sustain careers.
