Dr. Cecilia (Cissi) Alm's research interests focus on linguistic sensing and language-inclusive sensing with text, speech, and multimodal human data, especially at the nexus of affective computing and human-centered AI, including interactive and resource-efficient machine learning. She is dedicated to supporting student research and training experiences. Cissi is the joint program director for the MS in Artificial Intelligence, an associate director of the Center for Human-aware AI, and PI and director for NSF award NRT-AI: AWARE-AI: AWAREness for Sensing Humans Responsibly with AI and PI for the NSF-funded REU Site: Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI. She previously was PI for the NSF-funded REU Site: Computational Sensing, and subaward PI for NIH-funded Automated Analysis of Pragmatic Development in ASD. Besides her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign centered on computational linguistics, she also holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in Language and Speech Processing and a Certificate of Graduate Specialization in Computational Science and Engineering from UIUC.
