This REU program advances fundamental research in human-centered computational sensing for Human-centered AI. The program exposes students to a transdisciplinary research environment, infused with career-enhancing learning elements.
The REU Site in Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI will operate in-person in summer 2026.

Our REU program is designed to immerse undergraduate students in the research process early in their academic journey. Gaining hands-on research experience as an undergraduate opens the door to a wide range of opportunities, including graduate studies, industry roles, and other professional paths.

Undergraduates nationwide to explore human-centered AI at RIT
Over the next three years, the Research Experience for Undergraduates Site in Computational Sensing for Human-centered AI will welcome nine undergraduate students each summer to RIT’s campus. The site is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Alm and Fitch awarded NSF grant to study visual prosody in ASL in collaboration with Gallaudet University
Linguists face a resource gap for studying visual prosody and its grammatical and emotional functions in sign languages, and for creating AI systems capable of processing visual prosody. Faculty members affiliated with RIT’s Ph.D. program in Cognitive Science aim to fill that gap through Deaf scientist-centered research.

Student spotlight: Fulbright student's research applies AI to real-world problems
Diana Velychko, a Fulbright master’s student in artificial intelligence, is paving the way for more intuitive artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Her work focuses on the intersection of human perception and AI, aiming to bridge the gap between how people see the world and how machines interpret it.
