Faculty, students represent RIT at SPIE conference
RIT had a large contingent of presenters at SPIE Astronomical Telescopes & Instrumentation event that took place July 17-22 in Montreal.
Don Figer, director of the Center for Detectors and Future Photon Initiative; Lab Engineer Justin Gallagher; and astrophysical sciences and technology Ph.D. student Lazar Buntic presented three separate sessions: “The SATIN Infrared Detector Development Program and the Road to HELLSTAR”; “Characterization of single-photon sensing and photon-number resolving CMOS image sensors”; and “Evaluating detector requirements for the next UV/O/IR flagship observatory.”
Imaging science Ph.D. student Kathleen Oram, Professor Zoran Ninkov, and Rebecca Fitzgerald ’21 (photographic sciences) presented “Modeling the performance of the Hadamard transform spectral imaging technique with SAM OS: a ground-based MEMS spectrograph.”
Tenure track faculty Aleksandar Haber presented “Comparison of Adaptive Data-Driven Algorithms for Control of Deformable Mirrors.”
Astrophysical sciences and technology MS student Dale Mercado, Associate Professor Michael Zemcov, and astrophysical sciences and technology MS student Serena Tramm presented “Development of a fourier transform spectrometer for the calibration of THz on-chip spectrometers.”

Bruce Smith retires as director of RIT’s microsystems engineering doctoral program
Professor Bruce Smith has made a career of innovations in nanolithography—the process of etching complex patterns on semiconductors—and in preparing a long line of graduates for work in organizations around the globe. Celebrating 35 years as a faculty member, his retirement from RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering is a significant milestone that comes after many years of collaborating with leading semiconductor groups around the world.
