Starfish for Academic Alerts
RegisterThis one-hour session is designed to help faculty support student success through early alert and intervention strategies using Starfish. Participants will learn how to navigate the Starfish system, raise academic alerts, recognize student achievement with kudos, and connect students with appropriate campus resources. Whether you're new to Starfish or looking to refine your use of the platform, this training will provide practical guidance to streamline communication and enhance student engagement.
Designed for new faculty, this foundational training introduces RIT’s Learning Management System (LMS) and helps you get your course ready for teaching with confidence.
In this session, you’ll explore the LMS, known as myCourses, as the central hub for your course—where you can organize content, communicate with students, manage assignments, and track student progress. The training focuses on essential tools and workflows you’ll use right away, with an emphasis on clarity, efficiency, and best practices for supporting student success.
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- Navigate your course site and understand the instructor view
- Organize course content using common myCourses structures
- Post announcements and communicate effectively with students
- Create and manage basic assignments and assessments
- Locate key support resources for continued learning and help
This training is ideal for faculty who are new to myCourses or new to teaching at RIT. No prior experience is required. Whether you are preparing your first course or transitioning from another system, this session provides a supportive starting point and a clear path forward.

Learning in the SHED - A Student Perspective

This session explores the student experience in RIT’s active-learning classrooms, with attention to what helps students feel engaged, supported, and successful. We will consider how room setup, instructor choices, group dynamics, and classroom expectations shape learning from the student point of view. Faculty will leave with a better understanding of how students experience these spaces and with ideas for creating a more inclusive, effective learning environment.
