Sean Hansen

In his research, Dr. Sean Hansen is strongly oriented toward processes of group collaboration, both those focused around the creation of information systems (IS) resources and those mediated through such resources. A significant element of this orientation focuses on the diverse practices employed by IS development teams themselves.
He is deeply interested in the ways in which development teams across the methodological spectrum (e.g., structured development, agile software development, open source development, community source development, the DevOps model) structure their collaborative work and achieve a common design vision.
Beyond the domain of IS development, Dr. Hansen’s research has increasingly centered on IS-enabled collaboration in the U.S. healthcare system. This focus includes an exploration of both the adoption and use of electronic health records (EHR) systems and telemedicine technologies. In the United States, the last decade has seen a rapid adoption of EHR and other clinical health IT in pursuit of enhanced efficiency, reduced errors, improved patient safety, and increased quality of care. In light of the significance that healthcare holds for every member of society, Dr. Hansen believes the impact of these systems is one of the most critical questions facing the IS research community.
Dr. Hansen’s research has been published in the leading scholarly journals in the IS field, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of the AIS, Information Systems Journal, Communications of the ACM, and Information & Organization. He has regularly presents his research at leading conferences, including the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS), and the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AoM).
