Speak Write

Current Solution

A graphic representation of preferred communication and terminology has been developed based on survey results obtained from multiple stakeholders including individuals with disabilities, caregivers and the general public. This graphic representation will form the basis of a poster campaign to disseminate this information.

Problem Statement

There are many different challenges faced by people today, including disabilities, impairments, and handicaps. Along with these challenges come terms and ways of describing said challenges and those they pertain to. Awareness is often lacking in term usage and regarding its effect on people being referred to and/or spoken to or about. Design a simple, concise, and understandable way, graphically portray the importance of proper awareness with regards to positive and negative terminology in spoken and written communication.

Next Step

- IRB permission requested.
With IRB permission, we will be able to send the survey out to the RIT community. The larger population compared to Studio 930 would provide greater insight regarding terms, and allow us to tailor our poster campaign more closely to the responses of RIT students and faculty.

- Poster development.
The poster campaign will be developed with the incorporation of the survey information.  A successful outcome would garner the attention of those who observe the poster that would result in an understanding and thoughtfulness regarding day to day term usage.
