Wireless Refresh Project
Project Overview
The Wireless Refresh Project will modernize RIT’s wireless network infrastructure to ensure it continues to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff over the next decade. Over an 18‑month period, the project will replace more than 8,000 wireless access points across campus and upgrade the network to Wi‑Fi 7.
This effort represents a large‑scale refresh of the campus wireless environment, designed to maintain a reliable, secure, and scalable foundation for academic, research, and administrative activities. The project focuses on infrastructure modernization to support current demand and prepare the network for future growth.
Benefits
The Wireless Refresh Project will deliver meaningful improvements to the campus experience by strengthening the performance and resilience of RIT’s wireless network.
-
Increased capacity and performance
The upgraded network will better support the growing number of connected devices and the higher performance expectations of modern hardware. -
Improved reliability across campus spaces
Enterprise‑grade wireless connectivity will support learning, research, and campus life in classrooms, laboratories, active learning environments, residence halls, performance venues, and social spaces. -
Enhanced security and future readiness
Modern infrastructure and standards will strengthen the security posture of the wireless network while providing a foundation that can evolve with emerging technologies. -
Support for innovation and quality of life
By treating wireless connectivity as an enabling component of a modern campus, the project helps sustain academic innovation while improving the day‑to‑day digital experience for students, faculty, and staff.
Project FAQs
We do not anticipate outages, and the work should feel largely invisible to anyone in the area. Users may experience "rolling" service degradation specific to the small area where technicians are actively working. Wireless devices typically roam automatically to a neighboring access point (AP) and connectivity usually remains active.
Replacing the physical access point (AP) will take about 15-20 minutes; however, it will take up to 30 minutes before the new AP allows devices to reconnect.
Wireless devices typically roam automatically to a neighboring access point (AP) and connectivity usually remains active.
Users on real-time applications (like Zoom or Teams) might experience a brief glitch or momentary disconnect while their device switches over. During critical presentations occurring during active work windows, we recommend utilizing a wired (Ethernet) connection, which will remain wholly unaffected by this maintenance.
For any data transfers occurring during active work windows, we recommend utilizing a wired (Ethernet) connection, which will remain unaffected by this maintenance.
Wired (Ethernet) connection will remain wholly unaffected by this upgrade.
The work will be completed by a vendor partner with expertise in this area who participated in the pilot program.
Please refer to the building schedule below. We will do our best to keep the dates as accurate as possible but know that the schedule is tentative and dependent on contractor schedules, access needs, and other factors.
Yes. ITS has successfully utilized this upgrade model during our pilot in the Wallace Library and Ross Hall with minimal disruption.
Because this is a large, campus-wide initiative involving more than 8,000 access points, work must continue consistently throughout the full 18‑month timeframe. We will work closely with campus partners to carry out deployments during active teaching weeks in a way that minimizes disruption while keeping the project moving forward.
We will be arranging meetings with building coordinators to review site access requirements, confirm scheduling constraints, and establish clear communication throughout the project. If you are a building or floor coordinator, please reach out to the team at wirelessrefresh@rit.edu to get involved or report an issue.
If you experience connectivity issues, please follow these WiFi troubleshooting steps, or reach out to the RSC for more assistance
