Aquatics

Position Summary: Supervise the Hale-Andrews Aquatic Center and closely monitor all activities to ensure patrons safety. Provide a clean, safe and friendly pool environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of participants at all times
  • Enforce aquatic center policies
  • Utilize lifeguarding rescue techniques and administer first aid when needed according to department standards  
  • Properly demonstrate the use of all emergency equipment
  • Ensure all rescue equipment is in proper working condition

Requires one year of experience working as a Lifeguard

Position Summary: The head lifeguard position is designed to offer lifeguards a higher level of leadership, decision making skills, and responsibilities. These guards will help all guards with the daily tasks of being a lifeguard at RIT.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assist with the Interviewing of potential lifeguard candidates
  • Mentor newly hired lifeguards during the orientation process
  • Help run the in-service program to maintain lifeguard skills
  • Make critical decisions on pool opening and closing based on chemical or equipment failure
  • Answer higher level questions and assist with customer service type issues
  • Report concerns and complaints to Aquatics Manager
  • Assist in the performance review and evaluation of the lifeguards
  • Make sure the pool vacuum is used on the set schedule
  • Oversee that the chemical and pool usage logs are complete and accurate

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a RIT lifeguard

Position Summary: Provide one-on-one swim lesson instruction to children ages 4-14 years old and/or adults. Instructors will use the designed curriculum to teach appropriate skills to participants, evaluate their progress and provide feedback.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Instruct swim lesson participants using a predetermined curriculum
  • Enforce aquatic center policies
  • Maintain the safety of participants at all times
  • Communicate effectively with the lifeguards on duty and act as a team in an emergency

Business Office

Position Summary: Provide customer service at the SLC Main Office and perform various office-related tasks.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service at the front window, answer phone calls, emails and questions regarding recreation memberships, locker rentals, wellness classes, and other programs and services
  • Monitor a variety of computer applications including Innosoft Fusion (Member Management), Alarm Monitoring (facility access), EMS (facility reservations) and Humanity (Employee Scheduling)
  • Process memberships, locker rentals and late fees
  • Perform various administrative tasks such as copying, scanning, filing, sorting mail, managing packaged deliveries and providing recreation desks with materials and supplies
  • Loan-out office and meeting supplies as needed
  • Create reservations as needed
  • Post facility signage and manage signage requests
  • Provide support for professional staff within the department

Club Sports

Position Summary: Provide on-site emergency medical care for student-athletes participating in club sport games, and tournaments. Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by responding to injuries, assessing medical needs, and coordinating care with appropriate medical personnel when necessary.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate care for injuries and medical emergencies during club sports events
  • Assess and document injuries
  • Communicate effectively with coaches, athletes, and administrative staff regarding medical concerns
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and treatments in accordance with institutional and legal standards
  • Monitor environmental conditions (e.g., heat, field hazards) and advise on safety precautions
  • Assist in the implementation of emergency action plans (EAPs)

Position Summary: Supports the operations, logistics, and administration of a student-run club sport team. Managers serve as a liaison between the team, the Club Sports Office, and other campus departments during club sport events.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate team rosters and ensure all participants meet eligibility requirements
  • Assist with the submission of required documentation (travel forms, waivers, budgets, etc.) in a timely manner
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the team and Club Sports Office during competitive events
  • Complete Incident reports in coordination with external Athletic Trainer
  • Coordinate with other teams, officials, and event staff for competitions
  • Support event setup and breakdown for home games or tournaments

Intramurals

Position Summary: Referee weekly sport contests, set up and take down game equipment, and maintain a fun and safe atmosphere for all participants through knowledge of and experience with the game and game rules.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Set-up and tear-down equipment for scheduled games
  • Supervise use of game and field equipment
  • Inspect sports equipment and observe all participants to ensure safety
  • Keep track of event times; start or stop play when necessary
  • Ensure all Intramural participants sign-in to their games
  • Enforce facility and program policies

Position Summary: Referee weekly contests, set up and take down game equipment, and maintain a fun and safe atmosphere for all participants through knowledge of and experience with the game and game rules.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Officiate hockey games in accordance with established rules and regulations from start to finish
  • Communicate with players to address concerns, provide explanations for calls, and maintain a respectful environment on the ice
  • Inspect and ensure player equipment before the game to ensure it complies with safety standards
  • Wear an official hockey referee jersey with an approved helmet
  • Manage the pace of the game, ensuring that it flows smoothly and without unnecessary delays
  • Maintain control over confrontations and resolve disputes between players in a fair and professional manner
  • Document and report incidents to Intramural Administration according to reporting procedures
  • Possess a deep understanding of the Intramural Ice Hockey Rulebook and apply the rules in the games officiated
  • Address any safety concerns regarding player equipment promptly
  • Help scorekeepers if necessary and ensure the scorekeepers are paying attention to the game. Act professionally on and off the rink when engaging with players

  • Level 1 USA Ice Hockey Official certification or greater

Requires one year of experience working as an Intramural Official

Position Summary: Assist with the supervision and management of the RIT Intramural program during weeknight and weekend hours. This includes, but is not limited to, checking for accuracy and validity of team rosters, helping sport supervisors ensure adequate work shift coverage at intramural contests, monitoring game equipment, overseeing student supervisors and officials, and addressing in-game conflicts.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Oversee player eligibility through ID checks at all contests and verify team rosters
  • Assist in addressing disciplinary matters on individual players / teams and meeting with all parties involved
  • Assist in the end of season awards ceremonies
  • Supervise and evaluate sport supervisors
  • Verify student employee work hours through daily officials' report
  • Oversee nightly check-in of equipment for each sport
  • Use of scheduling software to input game scores
  • Some office work/meetings during regular work day

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one year of previous experience as an intramural official and/or sport supervisor
  • Thorough knowledge of rules of intramural sports offered

Requires one year of experience working as an Intramural Official

Position Summary: Assist with overseeing referees and the administration of intramural contests.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Assist in training and orientation of intramural officials
  • Set up/tear down the game day venue for competition (nets, equipment, pinneys, clocks, score tables, etc.)
  • Handle any official no shows and fill in until a substitute arrives
  • Administer game day paperwork (sign-ins, waivers, penalties, red cards, captain signatures at the end of contest, etc.)
  • Assist in resolving any disputed official calls. Facilitate any game problems
  • Evaluate officials after each contest
  • Report any incidents or concerns to the Intramural Manager on duty. Attend to any injuries
  • Assist building supervisors coordinating actions for any facility emergencies
  • Meet with the Program Coordinator as needed to report problems

Fitness

Position Summary: Provide service to all fitness participants and oversee the daily operations of the Wiedman Fitness Center and Baker FIT. Ensure a safe, clean, and friendly workout environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Wiedman Fitness Center activities and equipment
  • Enforce fitness center policies
  • Clean fitness equipment
  • Provide instruction on how to properly use equipment; spot lifters as needed and monitor the proper use of equipment
  • Record equipment issues and report facility problems
  • Provide equipment loan-out
  • Open and close facility according to proper procedures
  • Manage TV, cardio theater and music
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed

  • Must use the fitness center at least 3x/week and be knowledgeable of all fitness center policies

Requires one year of experience working as a Fitness Attendant

Position Summary: Assist in the management of the fitness center and supervision of student employees.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Train, mentor and evaluate Fitness Attendants
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to Fitness Attendants
  • Provide general orientations to fitness equipment
  • Manage and coordinate special projects as assigned
  • Help maintain and follow-up on equipment inventory and repairs
  • Meet with fitness center management on a weekly basis to discuss issues, concerns, policies, ideas, etc.
  • Each supervisor is responsible for a certain area within the fitness center according to their knowledge, expertise and interests

Position Summary: Certified Personal Trainers will provide personal training services to members of the RIT community.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized training to members of the RIT community

Marketing

Position Summary: Create engaging content, produce videos, and manage social media, gaining hands-on experience in design, video editing, and content creation.

  • Develop engaging content for RIT RecWell’s Instagram account
  • Increase student engagement by connecting the campus community with programs, services, and activities that promote holistic wellness
  • Ensure all content and communications adhere to University Brand Standards and align with the department’s mission and vision

Outdoor Education

Position Summary: Provide service to all Red Barn Climbing (RBC) participants and oversee the daily operations of the Red Barn Climbing gym. Ensure a safe, clean, and friendly environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Red Barn Climbing activities
  • Supervise the Red Barn access points via our fusion software
  • Manage the sale of memberships, day passes and equipment rentals
  • Ensure all participants have a current and up to date waiver for facility use
  • Enforce RBC policies
  • Clean equipment and facilities  
  • Provide instruction and oversight on the proper use of climbing walls and equipment
  • Record and report facility problems
  • Provide equipment loan-out

Position Summary: Responsible for setting routes in the Red Barn Climbing gym for participants, members and visitors to use. Use the guidelines set forth by the setting team, and Red Barn management to ensure safe and engaging routes. Clean and maintain the climbing walls, holds and materials.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Prep each region and develop setting place with other setters prior to setting
  • Set and forerun routes to identify and address any issues
  • Remove stripped holds whenever possible
  • Support cleaning and maintaining holds, through regular hold cleaning
  • Follow all safety procedures and policies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be able to rock climb
  • Must be able to move and lift equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

This is a stipend role that is scheduled based on class trips.

Position Summary: Outdoor Education (OE) classes and programs demand strong technical skills, situational awareness, and practiced judgment. The Student Outdoor Leader (SOL) role provides an opportunity for experienced students to deliver direct peer‑to‑peer instruction and support.

SOLs must be able to guide participants through high‑stress, fast‑paced activities while maintaining a calm, confident presence. They are expected to assess risk, make sound decisions, and adapt quickly to changing conditions - balancing the needs of their peers, the environment, and the dynamic nature of outdoor settings.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Peer Education: Provide peer to peer instruction and support during Outdoor Education classes under the guidance of instructors. This allows students enrolled in the class to create a unique learning environment grounded in mutual learning.
  • Instructional Assistance: Assist with on-campus and off-campus program delivery and class requirements.
  • Program Execution: Plan and execute on-campus experiences and events. Support the planning and execution of off-campus classes.
  • Collaboration: Work in conjunction with other RIT departments to expand peer to peer opportunities. Provide a unique student lens for the marketing of opportunities and experiences to other students.
  • Training: Participation in required training including Wilderness First Aid classes including CPR and monthly program planning.
  • Supervision: SOL’s will be supervised by the Outdoor Education Assistant Director as well as Field Instructors during off campus experiences.

Employment Dates: Hired end of fall semester. December 1st through November 25th (Spring Semester- Fall Semester)

Time Commitment: Semester long commitments can be made based on the student's schedule with summer semester included. The hope is for SOL’s to work 3 semester increments: Fall, Spring, Summer

Recreation

Position Summary: Clean and organize various activity areas and public spaces in the RIT Recreation and Wellness Programs facilities.

Position Summary: Monitor access to the recreational facilities and assist with the management of the indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Manage the Equipment Cage and provide recreational support services (lockers, equipment, towels, information) to recreation participants.

  • Monitor the electronic ID card reader and turnstile and check picture ID’s for proper identification

  • Sell guest passes to RIT sponsored guests

Position Summary: Assist in operations management and staff supervision of the recreation facilities during non-business hours.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Review daily reservations in scheduling program (EMS)
  • Check daily task sheet and complete nightly duties as assigned
  • Check for staffing changes; get coverage for any unassigned shifts
  • Handle facility access and membership issues outside of business hours 
  • Monitor, evaluate, train, and counsel student recreation attendants
  • Be asked to uphold and practice all department and individual facility rules, policies and practices
  • Responsible for, be trained, and certified in handling injuries (American Red Cross First Aid, AED, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer) as well as Blood Borne Pathogen cleanup and safe handling procedures
  • Work shifts throughout the day as assigned and be asked to work for paid special event shifts as needed (not to exceed 20 hours per week during traditional academic sessions)
  • Extra duties performed as assigned by Center for Recreation and Intramurals administrative staff

Minimum Qualifications

  • Personable attitude, good verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Applicants must be dependable, responsible, and have a proven track record of exemplary performance at the Student Life Center as a Recreation Attendant
  • Ability to work at least one weekend (Fri. – Sun.) shift is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous leadership experiences

Requires one year of experience working as a Building Supervisor

Position Summary: Assist the Associate Director of Recreation in the operations and management of the recreation facilities and services. They also evaluate, train and mentor Recreation Attendants and Student Building Supervisors.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Supervise the building and provide support to other student workers Monday through Friday mornings, afternoons, and nights and occasionally in the absence of full-time staff members
  • Aid the Associate Director of Recreation in daily facility operations
  • Develop innovative ways to improve policies and procedures
  • Assist the Associate Director of Recreation with equipment ordering, and various facility projects. Handle special projects as assigned
  • Assist with reservations and the set-up of equipment and facilities in the SLC and the Field House
  • Aid in making sure recreation and wellness class equipment is properly maintained
  • Maintain accurate facility usage statistics
  • Help coordinate racquetball and tennis reservations and class schedules
  • Conduct weekly inspections of facilities to ensure cleanliness and functionality
  • Help monitor the building intercom, alarm panel and security camera system and respond to door alarms that sound in designated areas of the building
  • Distribute information and answer questions about facility hours, programs, personnel, equipment and departmental policies
  • Help patrons with lockouts, making changes, and looking up lost, forgotten, or problem ID cards while the SLC main office is not open
  • Assist with the training of recreation employees
  • Manage equipment rentals and help maintain the organization of SLC equipment rental office
  • Assist with day-to-day laundry service (including towel service) and lost and found items

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must currently be employed as an SLC Student Building Supervisor
  • Must possess a personable attitude, strong communication skills, and be dependable, reliable, and responsible
  • This position requires self-directed, creative individuals

Wellness

Position Summary: Responsible for planning and leading courses for enrolled participants across a variety of subject areas. This role involves direct instruction, facilitation of activities, and the creation of a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment. Student Wellness Instructors serve as leaders and role models while delivering engaging, educational, and developmentally appropriate wellness programming.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate wellness courses, lessons, and activities
  • Prepare and deliver course content aligned with established learning outcomes
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs of diverse participants and skill levels
  • Promote safe practices and follow all program, facility, and university guidelines
  • Create an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming learning environment
  • Manage class flow, time, and group engagement
  • Maintain accurate course records including attendance tracking, grading, and submission of early alerts in accordance with program and university guidelines
  • Communicate with program supervisors as needed regarding course needs or concerns

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing
  • Ability to lead and facilitate group-based classes or activities
  • Strong verbal communication skills and comfort speaking in front of groups
  • Dependable, professional, and able to manage time and responsibilities independently
  • Willingness to follow university policies, safety guidelines, and program expectations
  • Ability to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CPR/AED, First Aid, lifeguarding, personal training, yoga, mindfulness, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience teaching, coaching, instructing, or leading group activities
  • Coursework or background in health, wellness, fitness, education, psychology, or a related field
  • Experience working with diverse populations and varying ability levels
  • Comfort adapting instruction for both physical and non-physical wellness topics
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
