Recreation - Entry Level Positions

Position Summary: Provide service to all fitness participants and oversee the daily operations of the Wiedman Fitness Center and Baker FIT. Ensure a safe, clean, and friendly workout environment.

Essential Tasks:

  • Supervise the Wiedman Fitness Center activities and equipment
  • Enforce fitness center policies
  • Clean fitness equipment
  • Provide instruction on how to properly use equipment; spot lifters as needed and monitor the proper use of equipment
  • Record equipment issues and report facility problems
  • Provide equipment loan-out
  • Open and close facility according to proper procedures
  • Manage TV, cardio theater and music
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to members' questions, concerns and suggestions  

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Special Skills Required:

  • Must use the fitness center at least 3x/week and be knowledgeable of all fitness center policies
  • Able to demonstrate how to use various types of equipment using proper form and techniques
  • Must have or acquire CPR/AED certification
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills

Qualifications/Special Skills Preferred:

  • Students who have taken classes in the RIT Health Sciences program or equivalent 
  • Students who are able to work opening shifts (5:45 A.M. – 8:00 A.M.) during the week
  • Students who are able to work weekends and during the break
  • American Sign Language skills

Hourly Wage:

  • Current wage = $14.20
  • New wage (beginning 1/1/2024) = $15.00

  • Applications are available for pick up at the Wiedman Fitness Center during week 11 of each semester. Applicants will have two weeks to complete and return the application with a resume and cover letter.

Hiring Manager:

Position Summary: Certified Personal Trainers will provide personal training services to members of the RIT community.

Essential Tasks:

  • Provide individualized training to members of the RIT community
  • Lead monthly fitness clinics and other programming as needed
  • Enforce fitness center policies
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to client questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Complete various administrative tasks as assigned
  • Schedule appointments, track attendance and client progress 
  • Provide introductory instruction on all fitness equipment to recreation members
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Personal training certificate required from a fully accredited organization such as ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA or equivalent
  • Must have or acquire CPR/AED certification
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to assess a client’s current fitness level and create an appropriate fitness prescription
  • Extensive knowledge of all Wiedman Fitness Center equipment
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills

Qualifications/Skills Preferred:

  • Students who have taken classes in the RIT Health Sciences program or equivalent

Hiring Manager:

Position Summary: Supervise the Hale-Andrews Aquatic Center and closely monitor all activities to ensure patrons safety. Provide a clean, safe and friendly pool environment.

Essential Tasks:

  • Ensure the safety of participants at all times
  • Enforce aquatic center policies
  • Utilize lifeguarding rescue techniques and administer first aid when needed according to department standards  
  • Properly demonstrate the use of all emergency equipment
  • Ensure all rescue equipment is in proper working condition
  • Test and record pool chemical levels  
  • Open and close facility according to proper procedures
  • Work collaboratively with other lifeguards as a team
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to member questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Assist in the maintenance, cleanliness and organization of equipment
  • Fill out daily usage reports and hourly counts
  • Ensure all Open Swim participants sign-in
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Special Skills Required:

  • Lifeguard certification required (new certifications or renewals may be provided)
  • First Aid, CPR, AED and Blood borne Pathogen certifications
  • Highly skilled swimmer
  • Must maintain personal fitness levels required to fulfill the job requirements
  • Ability to recognize dangerous situations and respond appropriately
  • Must pass local testing requirements for this position
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications/Special Skills Preferred:

  • Prior experience lifeguarding
  • Familiarity with the Judson-Hale Aquatic Center and policies
  • Students who are able to work weekends and during the break

Hiring Manager:

Position Summary:  Monitor access to the recreational facilities and assist in the operations management of the indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Manage the Equipment Cage and provide recreational support services (lockers, equipment, towels, information) to recreation participants.

Essential Tasks:

  • Monitor the electronic ID card reader and turnstile and check picture ID’s for proper identification
  • Enforce recreation facility and department policies
  • Sell guest passes to RIT sponsored guests
  • Respond to door alarms that sound in designated areas of the building
  • Monitor a variety of computer applications including Innosoft Fusion (Member Management), Alarm Monitoring (facility security), EMS (facility reservations) and Humanity (Employee Scheduling)
  • Distribute information and answer questions about facility hours, programs, services, personnel, equipment, lockers and departmental policies
  • Loan-out equipment for wellness, intramural and recreational use
  • Manage laundry and towel service
  • Monitor the building intercom, alarm key pads and security camera system
  • Open and close the facilities according to proper procedures
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to member questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Assist with reservations and the set-up of equipment in the SLC and Field House as needed
  • Assist the supervisor on duty and professional staff needs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Recreation Attendant interviews are generally held once per year. Applications are available Spring Term (week 6 – 8) for those seeking employment the following summer and/or fall. When positions are available, an advertisement will be posted at the SLC Equipment Cage, SLC Main Office and on the SLC lobby TV’s. A QR code will be provided with a link to the application.

Hiring Manager:

Position Summary:  Provide customer service at the SLC Main Office and perform various office related tasks.

Essential Tasks:

  • Provide customer service at the front window, answer phones, emails and questions regarding recreation memberships, locker rentals, wellness classes, and other programs and services
  • Monitor a variety of computer applications including Innosoft Fusion (Member Management), Alarm Monitoring (facility access), EMS (facility reservations) and Humanity (Employee Scheduling)
  • Process memberships, locker rentals and late fees
  • Perform various administrative tasks such as copying, scanning, filing, sorting mail, managing packaged deliveries and providing recreation desks with materials and supplies
  • Loan-out office and meeting supplies as needed
  • Create reservations as needed
  • Post facility signage and manage signage requests
  • Provide support for professional staff within the department 
  • Open and close the office and Main Office area according to proper procedures
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to member questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Maintain a clean, organized office area
  • Help with other projects and tasks as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Main office positions are available on an as needed basis. Advertisements will be posted at the SLC Equipment Cage, SLC Main Office and on the SLC lobby TV’s. A QR code will be provided with a link to the application. Selected applicants are invited for a formal interview with the Associate Director of Recreation.

Hiring Manager:

Position Summary: Provide one-on-one swim lesson instruction to children ages 4-14 years old and/or adults. Instructors will use the designed curriculum to teach appropriate skills to participants, evaluate their progress and provide feedback.

Essential Tasks:

  • Instruct swim lesson participants using a predetermined curriculum
  • Enforce aquatic center policies
  • Maintain the safety of participants at all times
  • Communicate effectively with the lifeguards on duty and act as a team in an emergency
  • Work with other instructors to effectively use aquatics equipment/resources in order to address client needs
  • Evaluate swim lesson participants: submit completed report cards, skills sheets and attendance after each lesson
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to participant questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

Qualifications/Special Skills Required:

  • Knowledgeable of aquatic center policies
  • Knowledge and application of swimming strokes and water safety skills
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in swim lessons instruction
  • Ability to work independently with energy and enthusiasm

  • Must be available on Sundays from 10 A.M. – 2 P.M. during the semester if teaching Children’s Swim Lessons 

Qualifications/Special Skills Preferred:

  • American Red Cross WSI or experience teaching swim lessons
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • Competitive swim team experience
  • Experience teaching swimming strokes and water safety skills
  • Experience working with children if providing children’s swim lessons

Intramurals - Entry Level Positions

Position Summary:  Referee weekly sport contests, set up and take down game equipment, and maintain a fun and safe atmosphere for all participants through knowledge of and experience with the game and game rules.

Essential Tasks:

  • Set-up and tear-down equipment for scheduled games
  • Supervise use of game and field equipment
  • Inspect sports equipment and observe all participants to ensure safety
  • Keep track of event times; start or stop play when necessary
  • Ensure all Intramural participants sign-in to their games
  • Enforce facility and program policies
  • Fairly apply rules and regulations to all contests 
  • Attend all clinics and meetings conducted by the Intramural Department for the training of officials
  • Must take and pass a test on officiating/department rules and regulations 
  • Respond to accidents and injuries
  • Initiate and execute emergency action protocols when needed
  • Respond to participant questions, concerns and suggestions

Non-essential Tasks:

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • Two years of experience or more participating in an organized sport
  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgement in order to make decisions quickly, consistently and fairly
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgement and manage difficult situations
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills

Qualifications/Skills Preferred:

  • Experience in officiating
  • Official Certification acquired through a national or international governing body
  • American Sign Language skills
