English Language Proficiency Testing

RIT English Language Exam

RIT offers an English Language Exam that students applying to RIT can take online to demonstrate English proficiency. Results from the RIT English Language Exam can be used in place of TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE exam scores.  The test results show whether you already fully meet RIT English language requirements or show which English courses you need to take to meet RIT’s requirements.

This online test costs $50 and can be used at RIT only.  Exam results are provided in approximately one to two weeks' time.  The exam is not valid for applications to other universities. This exam can only be taken once.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR SUMMER STUDENTS: All new summer students *must* have English test scores to enroll in ELC courses in order to determine which summer program you are eligible for.   If you already have a TOEFL or IELTS score, these may be used when applying for or enrolling in the ELC summer programs.   If you do not have a TOEFL or IELTS score, you should take the RIT English Language Exam as part of your application process.

Students take the RIT English Language Exam for the following reasons:

  • To apply for admission to an RIT degree program - Students applying to a degree program at RIT are required to submit test scores to demonstrate English language proficiency. This requirement can be met by submitting official results from TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or the RIT English Language Center Exam.  The RIT English Exam is an affordable and efficient alternative if you cannot or do not wish to take TOEFL, IELTS or PTE.
  • For a new result:  If you already have a TOEFL, IELTS or PTE result, but you would like another chance to meet RIT English requirements or change placement into English courses, you have the option of taking the RIT English Language Exam.
  • To apply to study English in the English Language Center at RIT: If you apply to study English language at RIT’s English Language Center as a non-degree student, you are required to have an English language exam score to place you into one of the ELC’s six levels of language learning.  Please register for the RIT English Language Exam below.  If you already have a test score such as TOEFL, IELTS or PTE that you would like to use instead, please contact the ELC at ritelc@rit.edu.

RIT ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXAM – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE THE EXAMS?

Students must complete the online exams before the start of the term, so enrollment in English courses (or changes to enrollment) can be made before the beginning of the term.   You will be provided with a deadline based on the term (fall, spring or summer) that you plan to begin your studies at RIT.   Many degree-seeking university students choose to do English courses in the spring or summer before they begin degree study in the fall.   Please contact RITELC@rit.edu if you are interested in information about completing English courses early.

WHAT IS THE ENGLISH EXAM LIKE?

The exam has three parts.  Most students must take all three parts, but some students may only be required to take some parts of the exam.   You can take the three parts of the exam on different days.

(1) Two-Part Reading/Writing Exam – This test has two parts. Part 1 is a 2 hour reading/writing exam. Students read several articles about a topic and answer an essay question. The writing includes summary, citation, and response. Part 2 is a multiple choice grammar test of 30 questions.

(2) Spoken Communication Exam – is a 60 minute exam with questions in three areas: 1. General information 2. Class Schedules and 3. Data Commentary. Students will hear the question and record their answer.

(3) CEFR Exam – This is a 60 minute exam that tests speaking, listening, reading and writing similar to TOEFL type questions.

HOW DO I TAKE THE ONLINE TESTS?

After you register and pay, you will receive an email that will explain how to access the exam.  You will get a ticket or "license" for each part of the exam.  You will need a government-issued ID like a passport and a computer that has good internet connection and a microphone with recording capabilities.

You must take the exams on a computer, so you must arrange for uninterrupted access to a computer for the exam.  You may NOT take the tests on a cell phone.  The test site will not let you log in using a cell phone due to test security reasons.

HOW WILL I GET MY RESULTS?

The English Language Center will provide the results to you by email within approximately one to two weeks.   If you are already an admitted student, you can also check RIT Student Information System (SIS) to see if any changes to your schedule have been made.

CAN I USE THE  RIT ELC EXAM SCORES TO APPLY TO ANOTHER UNIVERSITY?
