Seneca Park Zoo Internship
4-credit, Special Topics upper-division Biology elective course: 1001-559-06
Lecture: Fridays 3-5 pm
Intern: 8 hours/week at the zoo (day/time scheduled if accepted)
http://www.senecaparkzoo.org/
In the fall, we will be offering the zoo internship course which is an invaluable experience for students interested in wildlife, animal behavior, veterinary medicine, etc. Keep in mind though that although it is an unpaid internship, you will need to treat this as a job and will be doing hard work, not all of which is very glamorous (e.g. cleaning up poop!). You will not be cuddling with the orangutans or kissing sea lions but instead helping zookeepers prepare the food, clean up the enclosure or trying to help teach screaming kids!
This is not meant to dissuade you but we want to make sure that everyone who decides to apply for this internship has reasonable expectations.
Goals: provide opportunity for interested students to gain valuable experience working with Seneca Park Zoo staff, develop an understanding of the biological basis of the zoo.s activities, and familiarity with the daily operations of a zoo.
Requirements
- 8-hours/week working at the zoo (students must provide own transportation)
- 2-hour lecture & discussion/week at RIT campus (Fridays 3-5 pm)
- Weekly journal
- Weekly readings and assignments
- Final Project
- Synopsis of experience
* expect to invest a total of 12-16 hours/week in the course
Prerequisites: one year of introductory or general biology
Important considerations
You will need to treat this like a job, so must arrive on time, be willing to work hard, and in all weather conditions.
Please read over the application and job descriptions.
Feel free to contact Ken Nelson kongpt@rit.edu or knelson@senecazoo.org if you have any questions. If you would like to discuss the experience with students from last year’s class, we can provide you with names and contact info.
Deadline: Friday April 27th by 5pm
Fill out the electronic application and email to: Ken Nelson kongpt@rit.edu or knelson@senecazoo.org.
***Note: Acceptance to the internship is not guaranteed; you may be denied if you do not meet the prerequisites, if your schedule does not fit with any openings, or there are too many applicants in which case priority will be based on year standing.
