SOIS Increases Engagement with Rochester and OSHA Communities

Thursday, February 2, 2017

In an effort to create more robust experiential learning opportunities for SOIS students, SOIS has engaged local nonprofits in conversation and potential partnership opportunities. To aid in these efforts, SOIS hosted a networking lunch this fall with the Community Design Center of Rochester, a Rochester non-profit organization of design professionals promoting healthy, sustainable communities by encouraging quality design of the built environment and thoughtful use of built and natural resources.  Additionally, SOIS, in collaboration with COLA, hosted a spring networking lunch with the Monroe County Seneca Park Zoo on January 30. These conversations and potential partnerships will help to engage students and faculty in mutually beneficial opportunities.

SOIS's Kitren VanStrander, Director of Outreach Education and Training and director of the OSHA Education Center housed at RIT, is one of four people elected to serve four-year terms on the executive OSHA committee which focuses on policymaking and strategy development for the national network of OSHA education and training centers.  The OSHA Center provides OSHA-authorized training in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo at various locations, as well as creating off-site customized sessions. RIT's OSHA courses bring today's workplace issues directly into the classroom with relevant examples to illustrate key safety and health concepts for members of the Rochester community and beyond.
