Perspectives & Immersions
Perspectives courses are required for Associates (AAS) and Bachelors (BS) level degrees and count toward your general education requirement.
The perspective courses introduce students to fundamentals of a liberal arts and sciences discipline (methods, concepts, and theories) while addressing specific general education learning outcomes. There are 7 categories: global, social, ethical, artistic, scientific principles, scientific inquiry and mathematical.
The courses required for each degree are:
- Associates (AAS): 15 credit hours. One course from each of these categories: global, social, ethical, artistic, and scientific principles.
- Bachelors (BS): 24 credit hours. One course from each of these categories: global, social, ethical, artistic, scientific principles, and scientific inquiry. Two courses from the mathematical category.
More details about the perspective categories can be found at: https://www.rit.edu/academicaffairs/generaleducation/general-education-framework/perspectives.
Immersions & Minors
An immersion is required for Bachelors (BS) level degrees, and counts toward your general education requirement. An immersion is 9 credit hours of related general education courses (generally 3 courses). You must declare your immersion through SIS (under My Academics) for the courses to be counted toward the immersion degree requirement.
You can convert your immersion into a minor by taking an additional 6 or more credit hours of related courses. A minor is a total of 15 or more credit hours (generally 5 courses). Having a minor is optional. You can declare a minor by completing the form at: https://www.rit.edu/academicaffairs/registrar/sites/rit.edu.academicaffairs.registrar/files/minor_authorizationchange_3-10-15.pdf.
More details about possible minors and immersions can be found at: https://www.rit.edu/academicaffairs/generaleducation/general-education-framework/immersions-and-minors.
