Pamela Conley, associate professor in the Department of Liberal Studies at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, has been chosen for a Fulbright Specialist Program award. The program sends U.S. faculty and professionals to serve as expert consultants on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad for a period of two to six weeks.
Conley will provide support and expertise to the faculty and staff at Universidad Politécnica de Santa Rosa Jáuregui in identifying best practices for including deaf students at their university. The first of Conley’s two trips to Mexico begins Sept. 8.
Conley, who teaches courses on critical thinking and writing and the visual expression of Deaf culture, is one of more than 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise with host institutions abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program each year. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
“As a former Fulbrighter, it gives me great pleasure to see talented RIT/NTID faculty such as Pamela sharing her expertise with peers in other countries,” Caroline Solomon, NTID president and RIT vice president, said. “This particular Fulbright Specialist award is exciting, as it involves exchanging best practices of educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students between our two universities in Mexico. I look forward to learning about Pamela’s experience when she returns.”
