Amplifying Women’s Voices: Emily Sanders, Charting Her Own Course at RIT
Did you know Emily Sanders studied French and Art History and plays the ukulele? She and her husband, RIT’s 11th President William H. Sanders moved to Rochester nine months ago. In that short time, she’s been spotted at all sorts of events on campus. As one of the newest members of the RIT Tiger family we thought it would be nice to get to know more about her. We began by asking her to share some of the things she is enjoying at RIT.
Emily Sanders:
I have really been enjoying my busy schedule at RIT! Some of my favorites have been cheering loudly at our Men’s and Women’s hockey games, seeing students showcase their incredible talent at various performances, and experiencing the RIT school spirit at the Brick City Homecoming events.
Have you found a favorite spot on campus yet? What about in the Rochester community?
Like Bill, I love good coffee so Java’s and Artesano’s are frequent stops when I am on campus. I love exploring the Shed and Shop One as well. In Rochester we have enjoyed trying out the new-to-us restaurants in town. Tavo’s is one of my favorites. I also love going to The Little Theater.
What are some of your passions? Hobbies? What do you enjoy doing?
Throughout my life, art has been a constant hobby and passion of mine. I have been involved in watercolor painting, ceramics, printmaking and jewelry making. I love to knit, bake, hike, read and travel. I love going to art museums wherever I travel-they inspire me.
Please share some of your personal journey (family, hometown, working or volunteering interests)
I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan as the youngest of four. Outside of school I spent my childhood and teen years figure skating, playing tennis, and drawing. After high school, I studied French and Art History at Michigan State University. I’ve worked in libraries, banks and elementary schools; however, the majority and most important part of my life has been in support of our two children and Bill, to help in their successes.
I know student success is important to you. Your own children have graduated from college. Any advice for RIT students who are currently navigating college life?
My advice for students is to follow their passions and do what challenges and excites them. I believe that loving what you do and challenging yourself to continuously grow both is one of the most important parts of leading a fulfilling life and will lead you to opportunities you might not have been able to imagine!
This is Women’s History Month. Are there individuals that you look up to or admire? (These could be family members.)
There is no singular person that comes to mind. I just love Michelle Obama for many reasons. I am enamoured with Joni Mitchell’s beautiful lyrics and music, Julia Child for starting great new endeavors later in life and doing it her own way and finally, I admire my mother for her strength to persevere through many difficult things in her life.

Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?
I am a survivor of a very rare cancer and am grateful for life every day. My battle with cancer exemplified the power that positivity, love, and community can play in navigating incredibly difficult times.
Fun Facts
Is there a book or podcast you love and would recommend to others?
I am an avid reader! I love the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldon. I am just starting to get into podcasts and have been loving “Good Hang with Amy Poehler.”
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
I am probably more of a night owl - a good book or movie can keep me up for hours! However, I also enjoy waking up and watching the sunrise with a good cup of coffee, alongside Bill (a major early bird) and Ollie.
What are some of Ollie’s cute tricks and has he found a favorite spot at Liberty Hill?
Ollie’s newest trick is “paw,” where he offers his paw for a handshake. He is also pretty good at looking cute! Ollie has taken over the whole house and has many favorite spots, including laying in the sunbeams coming through the windows of the sunroom, curling up next to anyone who is here, and the backyard for playing fetch!
Do you root for a particular sports team? If so, what does game-day look like?
Our family represents four Big Ten schools: University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, and Purdue University so Big Ten football is certainly -BIG- in our household. We’ve started watching NFL recently, becoming Buffalo Bill’s fans now that we live near Buffalo. Personally, I am an avid tennis and figure skating fan.
You’re invited to a potluck dinner. What are you bringing?
A fancy dessert, of course, but it’s hard to choose because I make so many things! I like baking cakes, pastries, everything!
What would your friends or colleagues be surprised to learn about you?
I have hiked to the bottom (and back up!) of The Grand Canyon multiple times with Bill and recently hiked the Quiraing (a very scary trail) on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Oh, and I play the ukulele!
