Taboo Topics: Politics, Religion and Spirituality. Register Now for Together RIT!
Together RIT: A Day of Dialogue will be held Friday, October 23rd starting at 10 am. The theme this year is “Taboo Topics: Politics, Religion and Spirituality.” This is open only to the RIT community.
The first event takes place in Ingle Auditorium in the Student Alumni Union with a thought-provoking film screening of “Democracy for Sale.” It focuses on the role money plays in North Carolina politics and the democratic national voting process.
Immediately after the opening event, you can attend any number of workshops on topics from “Understanding Jewish Peoplehood,” “Queer Muslim Identity” and “Understanding University In (action) Amidst Trump Era Immigration Politics” to “Interfaith Dialogue as a Technique Against Political Polarization” and a film screening: “Women Protesting for Democracy and Human Rights” with a brief discussion to follow.
There are other film screenings, and you are encouraged to bring your own lunch for the Lunch Table Discussions unless otherwise noted.
Taj Smith, executive director, Community and Education in the Division of Access, Engagement, and Success is once again leading this initiative. He says, “I’m excited to see where this day brings us. Talking about politics and religion are often approached from a lens of fear of the Other. I hope the sessions presented can offer attendees positive examples of engaging in this polarizing content. I hope attendees leave with new hopes, rough drafts, and tangible skills for addressing competing truths and multiple realities. I believe our closing film, The Doctrine (of Discovery) represents this desired outcome the best.”
Most sessions will be located in similar spaces such as the Student Alumni Union, Campus Center, and LBR 1251 Stan McKenzie Commons.
You will need to register for Together RIT. Below is the link to do that and to learn more about this year’s programming.
