Amateur printing-inspired prints

During her time at the Stephen O. Saxe Endowed Research Fellowship, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro examined amateur newspapers from the mid-19th century in the U.S., The Kelsey Press Co. catalogues, printed ephemera, and other printed materials. She investigated the time frame and the circumstances under which the “Amateurdom” movement — young people experiencing being amateur printers and journalists — emerged and later disappeared. Based on her findings and drawing inspiration from the amateur newspapers, Núñez-Regueiro created three different editioned prints. She created her work on the SP-20 Vandercook press, with the wood type available at the Cary pressroom. 

Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker based in Ann Arbor, MI. 

Being an artist as well as an immigrant woman of color, Núñez-Regueiro relies on her own recollection of her migrations experiences and otherness, and contemporary collective historical memory, to create her work.
