The Power of Hybridity: Joining Letters, Ideas, and People
ARAVRIT By Liron Lavi Turkenich
ARAVRIT By Liron Lavi Turkenich, is a new writing system that fuses Hebrew and Arabic letters. It enables speakers of both languages to read the same words at once. With a portion of an Arabic letter on the upper half, and a Hebrew counterpart as the base, the characteristic features of each letterform are preserved and maintain readability without distortion to the authentic script. Each person can read in their own language while still acknowledging the other, carrying a message of coexistence, compromise, and inclusion. Through letters and language, communication’s daily building blocks, ARAVRIT sends a powerful message of potential hope.
This pop-up exhibition was part of Liron Lavi Turkenich's visit to RIT during the week of November 4, 2025. She gave talks at Rochester’s Temple Sinai and RIT Libraries about her development of ARAVRIT, and a day-long workshop for College of Art and Design students.
