Briana Loewinsohn, Thien Pham, and Gene Luen Yang create comics and graphic novels, and like many comics artists, they each got their start by self-publishing minicomics. In the 1990s and 2000s, self-published minicomics were often photocopied, staple-bound, black-and-white booklets. Artists made comics about anything and everything, from mundane happenstance to science fiction saga, and distributed them through the mail, at comics and zine festivals, and eventually through the internet.
From early self-published versions of classic works like Yang's American Born Chinese (2006) to the artistic and narrative precedents for critically acclaimed works like Loewinsohn's Raised by Ghosts (2025), Pham's Family Style (2023), and Yang's Dragon Hoops (2020), this exhibit highlights how comics artists at the turn of the twenty-first century turned to their own life stories and created the Graphic Novel as we know it today. Now both online and in print, these comics circulate around the world.
