A niche part of the comics world, 3D comics have a brief yet fascinating history.  From an enthusiastic start in the 1950s through a quiet end in the early 2000s, hundreds of issues were released, both well-known and unknown. Many 3D comics show beloved characters and panels, while others push beyond the classic comic format.

The Third Dimension: A History of 3D Comics would not have been possible without RIT Alumnus Stephen Neil Cooper ’66 (Photography). The comics shown are a small part of his donation of 143 3D comics to the Cary Graphic Arts Collection. A very special thank you to Coop for expanding our comics collection and providing material from a fascinating part of comic book history.
