Petroleum Bulk Storage

Accidental spills of chemicals, petroleum and other hazardous substances can happen any time and to any one. RIT's main goal is to avoid spills whenever possible but in the event that a spill occurs, the effectiveness of our response to these incidents determines how well we are able to protect and preserve the environmental quality of campus. RIT has created plans to minimize spill incidents, trains employees on how to respond to a spill and maintains an inventory of spill cleanup materials in case of emergency.

RIT stores and utilizes petroleum on campus for a number of essential functions, from back up generators to elevators. As such, RIT has created and maintains a Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Plan. This plan identifies potential hazards arising from petroleum spills on campus and informs those involved in the storage and dispensing of petroleum of the appropriate response measures in the event of a spill.

Employees who are required to handle petroleum as part of their jobs are required to be trained on the contents of the SPCC Plan on an annual basis.

Auxiliary petroleum bulk storage tanks are often a necessity in the event of maintenance or construction on RIT's campuses. Although often having less capacity than permanent storage tanks, these auxiliary tanks require additional regulatory and safety oversight. RIT manages these tanks through the Auxiliary Petroleum Bulk Storage Permit. Below is a guidance document to help RIT personnel and contractors navigate the requirements of these tanks as well as a link to the required permit request form.

Note: Auxiliary Petroleum Bulk Storage Permit requests must be submitted at least 2 weeks in advance of bringing a temporary or portable petroleum tank to any RIT property for more than 24 hours.
