Monday, February 04, 2019 11:15 AM - Monday, February 04, 2019 12:45 PM
Classroom #6/7
Two thousand years of Chinese dynastic rule fell to revolution in 1911, and warlord rule and chaos ensued. We will examine why the Manchu Dynasty collapsed, how the path to revolution was delayed by the Dowager Empress, and how change was intensified by the Opium Wars and Boxer Rebellion. This remarkable time will be illustrated by photographs and slides of Old China. Optional Text: Travels in a Vanishing Empire by James A. Mitchell, 9780998711300
PRESENTER: Hugh Mitchell has taught a number of courses at Osher/The Athenaeum over the years. He is the editor/author of a recent book on China and has published numerous poems and essays.
