Shaun Nelms, Ed.D., Superintendent, East High EPO Dr. Nelms brings us stories and hard numbers about the compelling changes at East. In recent years the university-led East High School EPO raised graduation rates 33% and deep-sixed dropout rates 90%. In May 2014 the state granted the UR management of East High. Dr. Nelms spoke at Osher in 2016, and he's back to share the body of results including why the best part of a student's day is likely their small teacher-led family group. Dr. Nelms will describe changes needed to turn around high schools in Rochester and urban schools across the nation. A research center has emerged in Rochester called CUES, the Center for Urban Education Success, a national clearing house for similar initiatives. Dr. Nelms is clinical professor of education at UR, director of the Center for Urban Success, and formerly led school services in Rochester, Rush-Henrietta, and Greece school districts.
