PLTW FAQs

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) credits are transcripted credits and are eligible to be transferred to another college or university. However, having credit does not guarantee that it will be accepted by another university or into any program, even at RIT.

It is important to check with the other school to determine whether or not the credit(s) will be accepted. All colleges and universities establish their own policies for accepting transfer credits and those decisions are based on many factors.  Most often, PLTW credits are counted as electives, both at RIT and at other schools.

If you are planning to use these credits towards your teaching certification, please ensure that the credits will qualify prior to registering for your RIT PLTW graduate class(es). Once awarded, credit is non-refundable.

It is important to understand that RIT college credit is administered through RIT, not Project Lead The Way. To qualify, you must achieve an 85% class grade and achieve the minimum required score on the PLTW National Assessment for that course.

Once a teacher successfully completes Core Training in IED, POE, DE, CIM, CEA, or GTT DM/AR, they can register and pay for the RIT graduate credit course. For more information, contact Sarah Pillittere, scppltw@rit.edu or at (585 ) 475-4744.

The following PLTW courses are eligible for graduate credit: Introduction to Engineering Design (IED ), Principles of Engineering (POE ), Digital Electronics (DE ) Civil Engineering and Architecture  (CEA ), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Design and Modeling/Automation and Robotics (DMAR ).

The following PLTW courses are eligible for undergraduate credit:

• Introduction to Engineering Design  (Design & Drawing for Production in NY (IED ) 
• Principles of Engineering (POE )
• Digital Electronics (DE )

Biomedical Sciences

Note: Biomedical Science courses taken before the 2021-2022 school year are not eligible for credit.

• Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS )
• Human Body Systems (HBS )
• Medical Interventions (MI )

No, earning RIT PLTW credit does not guarantee admission to an RIT academic program.

Students must take the PLTW National Assessment to be considered for college credit. The PLTW Classroom Assessment scores are not applicable to college credit.

The Project Lead The Way National Assessment is an exam students take at the conclusion of their PLTW course.  This exam is developed by PLTW and administered through your teacher.

The RIT grade is based solely on the PLTW National Assessment score. A scoring chart is available on our website.

The eligibility requirements for the RIT PLTW college credit is an 85% final PLTW class average and the minimum PLTW National Assessment score. Each PLTW course has a different qualifying grade. Use the grading key to locate your grade, which can be found on our at on our Undergraduate College Credit page.

Students have until our fall registration deadline of the year they graduated to register and pay for credit.  After that date, graduated seniors are no longer eligible.

Yes, however, you will be registered in the next RIT semester.

You will receive a Registration Complete email once your registration has processed in our system. This email is sent to the email address indicated on your registration form, so it is important that you are checking this email and monitoring your spam folder.

You can send a copy of your confirmation page. It is very important that you write the students name and confirmation number on your check.

To register for RIT PLTW graduate credit, submit your registration form, course Certificate of Completion, and payment to RIT.  For questions, contact Sarah Pillittere.

Once you submit your online registration, you will be brought to a confirmation page. You can print this page and include it with your payment.

Your registration will be processed once our office receives your payment in the mail.

The deadline to apply for credit is November 16, of the school year following the school year you completed the course. If you are a graduating senior or applying early decision, it is recommended that your registration and payment are received by July 14.

Yes, you can pay for Project Lead The Way courses with your 529 account.

Undergraduate RIT PLTW courses are offered at a discounted rate of $240 per course, paid by check or credit card. Financial assistance is not available for undergraduate credit.

Graduate RIT PLTW courses are offered at a discounted rate of $700 per course.

Project Lead The Way scholarships are offered to outstanding, admitted first-year students who have completed two or more Project Lead the Way courses. You must apply for admission to RIT by January 15 to be considered.

Each scholarship awards $14,000 per year and renew year to year. Up to 20 scholarships are awarded each year.

Yes, RIT PLTW Scholarships are renewable. 

Students who have completed the steps to receive credit will receive a confirmation letter of their awarded credit at the end of the semester in which they registered. Learn more about requesting your transcript

If you are an undergraduate applicant looking to send official transcripts as part of your admission process, transcripts can be sent directly to RIT Admissions from your high school guidance office.

If you are a graduate applicant looking to send official transcripts as part of your admission process, you may upload copies of their official transcripts as part of the online application process. RIT awards three credits for each Project Lead The Way (PLTW) course.

Please note: The RIT PLTW college credit does not have an RIT course equivalent. These courses will not be found in the RIT course catalog.
