RIT has launched a new survey that will allow the campus community to provide confidential, honest feedback about the university’s ability to create an inclusive, diverse, engaging, and supportive environment.

After the contested 2020 presidential election, the tumult of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and the national protests following the killing of George Floyd, RIT looked inward to see how to address the political climate with the student body. The result is an increased effort to create a campus culture of free speech and to give students the skills to participate in civil discourse respectfully and productively long after they graduate.

RIT’s community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni has grown larger than ever. Enrollment jumped to a new record last fall with 19,718 students studying across all campuses, up 1,050 from fall 2020.

RIT’s annual Let Freedom Ring event has been rescheduled to take place from 12-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, in Ingle Auditorium. The event was originally planned to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but was rescheduled when RIT closed due to a powerful winter storm.

Henry Louis Gates Jr. will deliver the keynote address at RIT’s 40th Expressions of King’s Legacy. The event is free and open to the public, taking place from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.

A gift from IDI Billing Solutions, a global provider of cloud-based billing, automation and workflow solutions for Communications Service Providers, will help RIT fund a series of important diversity initiatives. The company recently donated $162,000 to help RIT provide new scholarships, emergency support funds, and programmatic opportunities for RIT and K-12 students.

RIT received national recognition for its work to help diversify the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. STEM Workforce Diversity Magazine ranked RIT among its top 20 universities for 2021.

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine has recognized RIT as a 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recipient and a 2021 Diversity Champion. This marks the eighth year in a row RIT has been named a HEED Award recipient and seventh consecutive year as a Diversity Champion.

RIT has appointed Perry Ground, an educator and storyteller from the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation, as the newest Frederick H. Minett Professor. The Minett Professorship brings distinguished multicultural professionals to RIT to share their professional knowledge and experience with RIT’s students, faculty, and staff for one academic year.
