The CSTEP-McNair Scholar is Headed to Cornell
Chenxin Wang has a favorite quote: “Growth comes from seeking guidance and embracing feedback, even when it feels challenging at first.” Wang, a fourth-year biomedical sciences major, will graduate in a few days. Her next stop? Cornell University, where she has been accepted into a fully funded PhD program in animal science, focusing on genetics related to health. The CSTEP-McNair Scholar says the words in that quote have guided her this far.
“As a first-generation college student from a low-income family and an immigrant learning English as a second language, my journey into higher education has required constant adjustment and resilience. Despite these challenges, I have always held a clear goal, to pursue research that contributes meaningful solutions to the world. My undergraduate studies in biomedical sciences, along with microbiology and genetics research in Dr. Stefan Schulze’s lab, helped me build a strong foundation in scientific thinking and experimental design. Programs like CSTEP and McNair played a critical role in this journey by providing funding, mentorship, and writing support, allowing me to explore research more deeply and confidently recognize it as my path.”
Wang has most recently worked in the Comparative Cognition and Perception Lab with Dr. Caroline DeLong, studying animal behavior and cognition. She developed a deeper interest in understanding animals beyond just physiology, but connecting behavior, health, and environment. It all started with her own dog.
“My passion for animal health began with my rescued dog, Lisa, a three-year-old Labrador mix who faced several health challenges early on. Frequent veterinary visits made me realize how complex and individualized animal health can be. Through my work as a veterinary assistant, I observed that treatments are not always universally effective, and certain breeds are more prone to specific conditions. These experiences pushed me to think critically about the role of genetics in animal health and reinforced my desire to pursue research rather than clinical practice.“
She adds, “I see Cornell as a place where I can deepen my research skills and contribute to advancing knowledge in animal health and breeding. My goal is to better understand genetic predispositions to disease and use that knowledge to improve long-term health outcomes for animals. Rather than treating conditions after they arise, I want to be part of developing solutions that prevent them. For me, Cornell is not just an academic opportunity, it is a continuation of my journey toward becoming a scientist who can create meaningful change for both the animals and the people who care for them.”
