IoT World Today reports on a team of engineers from RIT that created a robotic system that can teach Tai Chi. 

The RIC-RIT World Remanufacturing Conference will feature a world-class line-up of keynote speakers and panel sessions with industry practitioners, tech innovators, policy experts, and scientific researchers discussing “Remanufacturing a Sustainable Future.”

Faculty researchers received a new grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a system that improves passage of tacit knowledge from skilled machinists to those coming into the field.

Zhi Zheng’s robot is skilled at Tai Chi, and her research team hopes it will soon lead a class of older adults at a local community center. Zheng, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in Kate Gleason College of Engineering, developed the humanoid robot as part of her assistive technology research.

Students in the museum studies program shared their research on cultural heritage imaging, preservation, and research by participating in the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Etta Arnold, Alana Bourgeois, and Izzy Moyer presented their papers which were completed under the supervision of Dr. Juilee Decker (Director of Museum Studies) and Dr. David Messinger (Imaging Science Program).

Yidan Hu and Ivan De Oliveira Nunes have each won Meta Research Awards for their cutting-edge cybersecurity research. The assistant professors of computing security are working to protect people’s safety on their augmented reality and smart devices.

The outside of RIT’s Brown Hall looks the same, but inside everything has changed. Once the final details are settled, Brown Hall will house new laboratories for genomics, computer engineering, and soil and traffic studies, as well as several computer facilities and office space.

In a move to further enhance an already robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, RIT is partnering with the NSF’s I-Corps Hub: Interior Northeast Region. RIT will join a consortium of 10 renowned regional colleges and universities that will utilize $15 million in NSF funding over the next five years to implement and execute a cohesive innovation ecosystem that delivers inclusive models of education and workforce training.

The Image Permanence Institute, housed in RIT’s College of Art and Design, received a National Leadership Grant for Museums from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for research into plastic deterioration of modern heritage collections, specifically their physical response to storage and display environments.

Scientific American talks to Jeyhan Kartaltepe, associate professor in RIT’s School of Physics and Astronomy, about what information scientists are learning from the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope.

RIT received two prestigious awards from the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine designated RIT as a 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award recipient and a 2022 Diversity Champion.
