Ashtray Salad Bowl

A drawing of an ashtray in the Vignelli archives led Julie Hirschfeld to consider a new use for its notched rim: holding salad tongs. She developed a glass bowl with a double wall, allowing its construction to remain visible from the outside. During fabrication, an attempt to form the inner wall produced a shallow, pillow-like vessel. Both the notched bowl and this unexpected form became part of her exploration of the glassmaking process.
