Seeking to understand the cultural norms and values in society are key components to social science research. In this program, you will have the opportunity to explore a city outside of the U.S. and employ methodological approaches learned throughout the course, Research Methods and Decolonizing Approaches. While studying abroad in the UAE, you will visit Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah and immerse yourself into the diverse culture of this newly developed urban Middle Eastern society. You will have the opportunity to explore research questions related to culture, ethnicity, gender, religious belief or non-belief, and social class while participating in daily social and cultural excursion trips.

  • Explore research questions related to culture, ethnicity, gender, religious belief or non-belief, and social class
  • Learn how to employ research methods in a social and cultural setting
  • Explore the modern, urban city of Dubai, visiting the Burj Khalifa, Museum of Islamic Civilization, Al Noor Mosque and travel to the nearby cities of Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

You’ll be enrolled in a spring course in Rochester and will travel to Dubai over spring break. No pre-requisites. Open to all undergraduate majors. Priority given to McNair & LSAMP scholars.
