Math and Science Support

If you are experiencing difficulty with your math and/or science course(s), we are here to help. We always suggest visiting your math and science instructor during their office hours or emailing your instructor to set up an appointment. As a supplement, we provide additional math and physics resources to all RIT students.

 Math Assessments

The ASC Math Assessment is a helpful service for students who:

  • Want to improve their performance and understanding in their math/science class.
  • Tried tutoring, office hours, or other similar services but still need more support.
  • Relate with one or more of the following statements:
    • I’m lost in my math/science class
    • I forgot my high school math
    • I was never good at math
    • I never had to study before, now I need to learn how
    • I get 100s on my homework but I fail my quizzes and/or tests
    • I understand in class, but get stuck when I try problems on my own.
  • Haven’t taken a math/science class in a while and are planning to take one soon.
  • Need structured support.

What to Expect

Request an appointment: Complete the Math Assessment Request Form and download the diagnostic exam to schedule a 30–45 minute meeting with a content expert. Sessions are available in person or online via Zoom.

Before your meeting: Complete the diagnostic exam and email your exam answers to the staff member you’ll meet with. This helps us make your session as productive as possible.

During your meeting: We’ll talk about your background, current challenges, and your diagnostic results. Together, we’ll create an action plan that may include:

  • New study strategies
  • Connecting with tutoring or study centers
  • Enrolling in a Critical Math course
  • Referrals to other RIT resources

 Math Support Courses

The ASC offers free, zero-credit math support courses designed to help students succeed in their credit-bearing math classes. Students who fully engage in these courses consistently show stronger academic performance and increased confidence in their math courses at RIT. The ASC courses emphasize hands-on, active learning and include regular feedback from the instructors.
