Supplemental Instruction (SI)
What is Supplemental Instruction?
Think of SI as your built-in study group—a place to learn alongside classmates, guided by someone who’s been in your shoes and knows how to help you succeed.
Each one-hour session is led by a trained peer who has recently completed the course with strong results. Together, you’ll review key concepts, practice problem-solving, and explore strategies for how to learn—not just what to learn.
Research shows that students who regularly attend SI sessions are more likely to earn higher grades. Participation is always voluntary, free of charge, and attendance is anonymous—so you can join at any time, without pressure.
RIT’s program is accredited by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
What Makes SI Different
- Course-focused
SI is built into some of the toughest classes to help everyone succeed, not just students who are struggling. - Peer-led
Your SI Leader took the class recently, did well, and knows what it takes to succeed. - Collaborative
It’s not tutoring or lecture—sessions are interactive, with students working together to master concepts and study strategies. - Connected
SI Leaders attend class with you, so they know exactly what’s being covered and when. - Backed by training
Leaders are trained and supported by staff certified through the International Center for Supplemental Instruction (ICSI). - Low-pressure
Sessions start early in the term, and you can join anytime. Attendance is always voluntary and anonymous.
