Fiesta en La Plaza: Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month Kickoff

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. | Global Village Plaza
Join us for a Fiesta en la Plaza to kick off our Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month! All RIT students, staff, and faculty are welcome to swing by to enjoy treats, a live Latin Jazz Quartet, and cultural activities. Learn about some iconic Latino figures in history and their contributions to what makes us America today.
Love Our People Like You Love Our Food
Tuesday, September 23
5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. | MOSAIC SAU 2510
What does it mean to be Latin American? There’s the food, music, dance, and cultural traditions, of course, and the pioneers – groundbreaking athletes, scientists, artists, judges, and more. But what does it mean to be Latin American in the U.S. today? To be immigrant, citizen, noncitizen, resident, migrant, first generation, undocumented, or asylum-seeker?
We all inhabit numerous identities, some we have chosen for ourselves and some others have imposed on us. Who creates the borders that define our identities? How do we celebrate heritage and identity while grappling with the full spectrum of what it means to be Latin American in America today?
Join a roundtable discussion with Professors Claudia Bucciferro and Anthony Jimenez from the College of Liberal Arts that calls for a clearer understanding of our Latin American students and communities at RIT and beyond. Open to all.

Into the ROC: Dough & Dialogue
Saturday, October 4
10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. | 1:30pm - 4:30pm | The Commissary
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Into the ROC! In partnership with the Rochester Brainery, we're heading to the Commissary to learn how to make sweet and savory empanadas from Chef Christin Ortiz. We will be hosting two sessions, so take note of the session times. Buses will depart from the Sentinel Statue promptly at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Here is more information from the Rochester Brainery website: Most cultures have their own version of a dish that features meat or cheese wrapped in dough; whether it’s pierogi, dumplings, or ravioli. Latin America’s answer is the empanada! In this class, you will learn how to make both meat and sweet empanadas as well as your own dough. Students will have a hands-on learning experience and leave with all the recipes created in class.
