Glucose Monitoring for Dogs and Cats

Diabetes technology is at the forefront of the modern healthcare industry. One of these devices is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which determines the blood sugar levels in those who have diabetes without the need for a finger prick. However, these new solutions are focused on the human species. Our novel project explores the idea of a CGM specific for cats and dogs. Currently, diabetic animals receive daily insulin injections, follow a special diet, and a good fitness regimen to keep their blood sugar stable. Many potential animal owners are nervous about handling the responsibility that comes with having a pet with a disability and are thus less likely to adopt them. This senior design project presents a solution that may put owners at ease when it comes to caring for their diabetic pets, and allow veterinarians to explore animal endocrinology and diabetes in depth without interfering with an animal’s daily activities.
